This heavily-researched book has everything you'd ever want to know about the wrestler known as Ed "Strangler" Lewis. Steve Yohe has devoted a large part of his life studying the man, and with the help of Gavin O'Keefe and others has created this archive that features not only a detailed biography of Lewis, but his title history and ring record. It's a big, big book about an even larger man.

Easily the definitive work on Ed Lewis, and the heavyweight title picture of his era. Ed Lewis occupied that enormously important era of wrestling history between the Gotch era and the Thesz era, when the sport went from the slower, "realistic" Greco-Roman and catch-as-catch-can styles to the flashier, strictly performance-based style that we have today. Lewis and Co. help build the sport back up after the Gotch/Hackenschmidt fiasco, and along the way effectively commit a few similar travesties of their own, killing various towns over the years, but always steadily moving the sport forward. An impressive amount of research went into this work, by a murderer's row of pro wrestling historians and beaten into shape by the inimitable Steve Yohe.The photos are wonderful, and the work is thoroughly cited with an enormous number of end notes used. In a lot of ways, as the title of the book alludes to, this book is both a biography of Lewis, and a partial debunking of his myth. Both "The Fall Guys" and "Hooker" are cited liberally, along with an unpublished autobiography Lewis had done, and every story compared to the newspaper coverage of the time. In fact, the end notes, over 480 of them, take up probably 20% of the book's page count, filling in a lot of detail that just didn't fit into the narrative of the main body. Some of them take up nearly half a page, and they offer not only expanded detail about the point referenced, but also provide a lot of Yohe's reasoning behind many of his conclusions about what may really have been behind the stories.
The biggest (only?) flaw, however, is that the book desperately needed one final pass by a proof reader to catch all the typos and grammatical errors. This book could really use a second edition, both to clean up the problems with the text, as well as possible fill in a but more detail now that there are so many more newspaper archives available online. Another few dozen matches could be added to the record book appendix.
That said, this is an important work, and easily rivals Lou Thesz & Kit Bauman's "Hooker: The Authentic Wrestler's Adventures Inside the Bizarre World of Professional Wrestling" and Tim Hornbaker's "National Wrestling Alliance: The Untold Story of the Monopoly That Strangled Pro Wrestling" as one of the most detailed and heavily researched books on the history of the "sport".

$100 for a book by a wrestling fan???? Give me a break!!! I can't believe the author and/or publishing company would have the nerve to charge this much for a book. It has so many typos, misspellings, grammatical mistakes, and factual errors. Couldn't they have hired a PROOFREADER????
Steve Yohe is one of the great wrestling historians of our time.
Lewis was far more than just another professional-wrestling champion. He crossed the line and became a cultural icon. Pro-wrestling is a predetermined show and the author here deals with that and everything else known and much that was previously not known about Lewis. If you have any interest in "Strangler" Lewis, you should own this book and read it.
Pro-wrestling became the circus it currently is on the backs of guys who could really wrestle, even though it was likely rigged going back to the first Olympic Games.

I agree. Steve Yohe did the hard work to research Lewis and the wrestling scene at the time and put it in a chronological narrative with footnotes. If you are afraid of the high price, get the softcover version or directly from Ramblehouse online, Please note the author did not set that price and is not making a profit on this title. It was a labor of love.
This book is an amazing historical record. Steve Yohe has spent years researching and compiling this information about the life and times of Ed "Strangler" Lewis, one of professional wrestling greatest stars as well as one of the great figures of America's Golden Age of Sports. Despite what one reviewer said there are no factual errors in this book. I have been researching and studying old-time combat sports for many years and can confirm all the dates, names, results, etc. that Yohe offers in this incredible volume. He does offer opinions and analysis in attempting to make sense of the wild and wooly world of pro wrestling, and I may have a different outlook on a few of his comments, but the facts remain the facts. And this book is full of facts!
